Robotic Process Automation is software that automates business processes.
Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is a term created by Blue Prism and describes technology that allows people to develop software robots that imitate human interaction with other systems.
This technology works with the existing systems in the company and does not require any invasive interventions.
A software robot (or robot) is just a set of instructions that tells the robot when to perform a specific action such as reading an Excel file or clicking on a button.
Assume part of an employee’s job is the process shown below.
Using a tool like Blue Prism you can “teach” a robot to perform all the steps necessary to complete this process. This will free up the employee to perform more meaningful work.
In many ways the robot can be seen as an employee in the company and will have similar initial setup requirements that any new employee has. This would be access to the system it has to work with, a machine to run on and possibly an email account.
