Inputs and Outputs in Blue Prism

Inputs and outputs are used to pass data from the process to the objects and vice versa. Both are created in the object and then get used in the process.

1. Inputs

If you have an action that writes some text to software, you will need to setup an input for that action since the actual data to be written is sitting in the process.

Process Inputs

You will also need input(s) for actions that select an item in a drop-down list.

The input for an action is setup by double clicking the Start stage of that action. For each input you need to provide a name, data type and the appropriate Data Item to store the input. You can also provide a description for the input.

The screen shot below shows the inputs created for a Login action which writes the Staff Number and Password.

Login Inputs

When you use this action in a process you will see the 2 inputs you created on the Input tab. For each of them you will need to provide a suitable value.

2. Outputs

If you have an action that reads some text from a screen, you will need to setup an output for that action since the data needs to be given back to the process.

Process Outputs

You will also need an output for an action that reads whether a check box or radio button is on or off.

The output for an action is setup by double clicking the End stage of that action. For each output you need to provide a name, data type and the appropriate Data Item which has the value to be given back. You can also provide a description for the output.

The screen shot below shows the output created for an action that reads a confirmation code.

End properties output

When you use this action in a process switch to the Output tab to see the output you created. You will need to provide a suitable Data Item to store the data in the process.
